How to Structure a MEAN Stack Project You Can Explain in Interviews

5 min read R Square IT Support TeamSample article

A clean folder structure makes your project easier to build — and much easier to explain. Here is a practical layout for Angular + Express + MongoDB.

When an interviewer asks “walk me through your project”, a clear structure helps you answer with confidence. Here is a practical way to organise a MEAN Stack project.

Backend (Node.js + Express + MongoDB)

text
server/
  src/
config/ # env and database connection
    models/ # Mongoose schemas
    routes/ # route definitions
    controllers/ # request handling
    services/ # business logic
middleware/ # auth, validation, error handling
    app.js
  .env.example

Frontend (Angular)

text
client/src/app/
core/ # singleton services, interceptors, guards
shared/ # reusable components, pipes, directives
features/ # one folder per feature (orders, products...)
  app.routes.ts

How to explain the request flow

  1. An Angular component calls a service method
  2. The service uses HttpClient; an interceptor attaches the auth token
  3. Express routes the request through middleware to a controller
  4. The controller calls a service that queries MongoDB through a Mongoose model
  5. The response travels back and the component updates the UI
